The MSU Vertebrate Museum, currently housed in 403 Lewis Hall, began with a collection of specimens that date back as far as 1911, making them historically significant. Today, that collection has grown to more than 60,000 vertebrates including fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and a large variety of mammals. Funding for curatorial care has been spotty over the years and that has taken its toll on the specimens. Our goal with this MSU Giving Day 2021 event is to help fund a position to help care for and maintain the collection and perhaps even replace some damaged specimens. While we don't expect to achieve the $67,000 needed to fund a full-time curator, we do hope to fund a student worker to begin implementing the necessary maintenance tasks to make sure this collection continues to serve academia both here at MSU, in community outreach programs, and higher learning institutions throughout the world for the next 110 years!
