Help support ASCE at MSU design and compete with our first concrete canoe in nearly two decades!
This year, ASCE at MSU will be developing a mix design out of cork and other fine aggregates in order to produce a concrete less dense than water. We will then construct a canoe form to place the concrete mix onto, which once cured can be removed and sanded down. The canoe will have the capability to hold up to four people at one time.
Our goal through the MSU Giving Day 2021 is to fundraise enough money to purchase multiple material types for experimenting. The design phase requires extensive testing with different form materials (foam, wood, plastic), types of reinforcements (plastic mesh, post-tensioned steel wires), and cement to aggregate ratios. Therefore, the more materials we are able to acquire for this preliminary design stage, the more opportunities we will have to work out the best mix and construction techniques for our final concrete canoe product!
