About our 2023 Giving Day project
Field experiences create opportunities that encourage critical thinking, long-term retention, positive attitudes towards science, appreciation for nature, and increased scientific curiosity. Field trips and camps facilitate the study of earth processes, earth resources, earth history, and environments that people interact with.
Our goals
We wish to raise money to support field experiences for students in our program. The cost of field experiences represents a barrier for some students. Student fees for summer field camps range from $504 to $1,560. Transportation costs for Geography and GIS Planning option students to leave the classroom and learn about settlement history and patterns, water resources management, community sites can be costly. We are committed to offering our majors immersive educational experiences. To help us toward this goal, we hope to raise $10,000 on MSU Giving Day.
About our organization
The Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University is home to programs in Geology, Paleontology, Geography, GIS/Planning, and Snow Science. Students are provided with field trip and fieldwork opportunities as part of their coursework, independent studies, and research projects.

This project will provide MSU ESCI students access to diverse field experiences that are applicable to societal issues and the career opportunities available today. Field experiences create opportunities that encourage critical thinking, long-term retention, positive attitudes towards science, appreciation for nature, and increased scientific curiosity. Your contribution will make it easier for faculty to offer these experiences and reduce the financial burden on our ~215 majors.
